Billy Gaines Bio
  • Billy’s first musical training was his mother telling him to sing from his stomach (diaphragm) as he would sing and she would play piano a practice that began as early as he can remember.
  • Attempts by his Grandfather who was a piano teacher to give him piano lessons at the age of 6 failed because he was too interested in sports and couldn’t stand having his knuckles rapped for hitting wrong keys.
  • In the fourth grade was sent to the school cafeteria/auditorium to be tested for musical inclination but being painfully shy he panicked and repeatedly answered wrong when asked by the musicologist which key was higher or lower. He was sent back to the classroom with the recommendation that he not try to play a tonal instrument this assessment of his talent had a crippling affect on his self esteem resulting in him choosing snare drum instead.
  • Sang in the school choir in the sixth grade and was chosen to be a part of the Richmond Public Schools on parade a Mass choir and orchestra recording that was done at the Richmond Mosque.
  • Was hit by a car and nearly killed at the age of 12 leading to a realization of his own mortality and of the fact that God had preserved his life for a reason. This was the beginning of his search for Gods’ purpose for his life.
  • Continued to play snare and percussion in 7th grade and in the 8th grade was given the task of playing Timpani fir the Orchestra have to tune the timpani’s dispelled any doubt about his ear for pitch.
  • Was told about salvation by his 17-year-old cousin at the age of 13 and received Christ as his savior at the age of 14.
